Psychotherapy can provide a safe space to express difficult or uncomfortable emotions that may be hindering you or your young persons ability to live fully. In psychotherapy, there is no set agenda, and people are encouraged to talk about what is on their mind. It offers a dedicated space to simply be, express, and feel truly seen and understood by someone outside of their immediate circle.
This can be difficult and finding other ways of getting things across can be helpful, sometimes creative arts can facilitate this process. For primary-aged children, 'play therapy' techniques might be used, they may express what they find difficult by 'playing out' their experiences.
There is no pressure to create art if that doesn't feel comfortable. Instead, the focus is on finding what feels right and fostering a sense of connection and understanding. The process is entirely client-led, creating a safe and nurturing environment.
Some techniques may include:
Tools for managing anxiety and fear
Creative visualisation
Sand play
Painting, drawing & play dough
For some, creative expression may come through conversation, expressing vulnerability, humour, or shared laughter. These interactions can be just as therapeutic, allowing the client to explore emotions, and process experiences in a way that feels natural to them.
I recommend starting with an initial consultation to discuss the background of the referral. After this, I usually suggest an assessment session for either you or your child, followed by one to five sessions. We will then conduct an informal review.
